Deirde Pinnock: Woman of Colours
Threads of Resistance
Opening March 5th at 5:30pm-7:30pm
Deirdre Pinnock is a talented Rug Hooker, passionate mental health advocate, aspiring entrepreneur, and self-identified ‘woman of colour’ based in Vancouver, BC. She works to fuse vivid colours, playfulness, and therapeutic qualities, into various creative pieces of work.
The sisterhood of Rughookers allowed her the opportunity to meet Weavers, Knitters and other supporters who have propelled her to create outside of her comfort zone. Her newfound confidence and creativity has validated her so much that she’s taken on the performing arts.
Deirdre’s first piece, called the “Welcome Mat”, received media attention and led her to enter the “City Public Space” exhibition. She was then asked by the City of Richmond to tell her inspiring story. The City of Richmond currently features her artwork.
Outside of rug hooking, Deirdre is involved in meaningful creative pursuits such as yarn bombing and stand-up comedy. She yarns bombs positive and uplifting messages such as “be kind” and “you are enough” into public fences around the city as well as performs stand-up comedy about being Black in Vancouver.
