About the Artist
Born in San Salvador, El Salvador, Jocelyn Sánchez is an interdisciplinary artist and freelance illustrator known by the moniker “creamy skeletons.” She graduated in 2015 with a BFA in Visual Arts from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC, and furthered her education with an M.A. in Animation from the University of South Wales in Cardiff, UK, in 2016, graduating with honors. Her art practice is characterized by a self-reflexive and impulsive nature, blending traditional illustration with digital media. Deeply influenced by pop surrealism and Latin folk art, Jocelyn’s creative process centers on themes of the divinity of nature, magic and memory. Within her practice, she explores themes of magic, Salvadoran folklore, death, and self-reflexivity. She views the subjects in her illustrations as spirits of past emotions, people who have passed on in her life represented by animals, her ancestors, and reflections of herself.
About the Exhibition
'Without memory I dreamed of your spirit' merges two distinct identities through the juxtaposition of autumn, a season absent in El Salvador, and indigo, a color not native to Canada. By intertwining these elements, the works create a tactile homage to the artist's personal sense of home, shaped by unique experiences and stories passed down through generations. Spirit imagery, a recurring motif, represents memories and stories, calling back to ancestral spirits that may follow you for generations, becoming integral to one's identity. These ghosts, both literal and metaphorical, influence a sense of home and self. These works invite viewers to engage with the darker aspects of life, encouraging contemplation of the unknown. Themes of transformation and death serve as gateways to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the present moment.
