Artist Statement
Shawn approaches art with a stream-of-conscious approach, transmuting the innocence of 80’s pop culture exuberance and vitality into distinctive, original artworks. He transcribes the playful images dancing in his brain onto canvas using a mixture of spray paint, airbrush, and acrylic mediums. Using these mediums, he embraces the raw and visceral, choosing beautifully unrefined images of child-like whimsy. Shawn draws you in with his promise of a return to unfettered youth, bathed in palpable colours and warm, familiar forms.
Short Bio
Shawn Hefele, also known as ‘Heph,’ is a Vancouver Island-born artist specializing in guerilla and social-centric art, regularly contributing and creating original artworks on the Island and throughout the Lower Mainland. Heph has been featured in numerous profiles and documentaries about Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and lives by his ‘Paint everyday’ philosophy. His artwork and approach to creativity represent his undying devotion to bringing awareness and positivity to the DTES.
“My philosophy for artwork and life is the same: to bring beauty and hope to people. My art aims to reach a demographic who may not visit galleries. I look to present messages and stories about my community- while simultaneously bringing light, color, and maybe a smile to people who live here.”
