Artist Statement | Nadia Baker
Through my art I offer a playful examination of our natural and human-made environments. My current work is inspired by a visit to Joshua Tree National Park and explores themes of nature and escapism. I was drawn to the enormous desert boulders and the arch-like form they share with rainbows. In the Boulder Fantasy series, I combine the boulder shape with a child like vision to create an imaginary landscape. In this series colourful lush vegetation of blooming flowers, waterfalls, and crystals come together with the boulders, to reimagine an unreal and welcoming environment.

Artist Statement | Sonia Mocnik
Sonia Mocnik’s watercolour progression has always included nature in many of her themes. She loves the vibrancy and colour of tropical foliage and flowers. This love has cultivated itself from her travels, past floral arranging, wreath making and general love of gardening. Her photographs aid in her watercolour process, as does her time outside in a plein air environment. She enjoys landscapes and painting people, but she was compelled to try and stay focused on one series of watercolours. Rather than jumping from theme to theme, she thought it time to pursue one area and maybe find her muse while completing the series.
Artist Bio
Mocnik is inspired by her surroundings; from cityscapes to the great outdoors. Vancouver born she has always enjoyed creating some type of art. As a Watercolorist, Sonia paints with the colours that move her from an urban scene to nature’s blooms. The energy of each captured moment comes back through brushing watercolour onto paper. Blooms become larger, chairs become vibrant, and people add a sense of mystery. She wants to convey a story and hopes the emotion felt by the viewer when they see her paintings will speak to them and their emotional state of mind.
Sonia’s love of all things creative started early in school and continued into junior high where she had a wonderful art teacher. She has furthered her skills in painting through art instruction with the Federation of Canadian Artists Foundations Program, as well as other art workshops in Canada and in Mexico. Plein Air and urban sketching are some of her favorite activities. She has won awards at the Harmony Arts Festival, Gibsons’ Plein Air, Semiahmoo Art Center Paint the Town, as well as Paint Out Ajijic in Mexico.
