John Clinock
Artist Statement
I’ve made and taught visual art in Victoria, Vancouver, and the UK for over 30 years. In 2019 I returned to painting after 3 years of explorations in mixed media installations, wall reliefs and ceramic sculpture.
My return to painting culminated in a month-long art residency in Mexico. During that time, I made the works on paper that form the essence of this exhibition. They reflect an intense 4 weeks exploring my creative process and my inner self.
For the last decade or so, my 2D and 3D artwork has been mostly expressionistic and imaginative figuration: implied visual metaphors conversing with elements that contain a possible likeness but only hint what that may be.
The figures in my art manifest as facets of my subconscious seeking to connect to viewer and world. Their appearance on the working surface emerges slowly, through layering, spontaneous mark-making and the serendipity of gesture and brush.
I work and images appear. I make no initial plan, drawing, or judgement and remain in conversation with the painting as it develops. I accept, honour and nourish the figures and forms that emerge. Each piece I make becomes a deeply personal journey, an inner dance with those aspects of consciousness that are mysterious and elusive.
The act of art enchants me. The sensual and quintessentially magical process of making something from nothing animates my life and opens me to all possibilities of wonder, chance and the unexpected. I approach each working surface in search of another disclosure of self. I play and lose myself in the act of art. I work until I disappear.

Jan Appel
Artist Statement
Through the medium of paint, Jan Appel investigates thematic questions regarding existence in the contemporary world. The Painted Story of The Meat People is an amalgamation of paintings inspired by mythologies that depict imagined moments and narratives of fictional characters. The Meat People are invented figures created by the artist. These characters are at times doing banal activities, or some other moments dancing and playing instruments. Through the use of material exploration, storytelling and world-building, Jan is exploring his relationship with mortality, impermanence, toxic masculinity and what it means to live and have a human experience.
