Artist Statement
I am a professionally trained painter, this year I am graduating from the Emily Carr University. I like to create aesthetically pleasing artwork imbued with deeper meaning using diverse materials and techniques. I am connected to different cultures based on my mixed background.
This time, I am presenting a series of paintings, Messages from Trees, where I have incorporated ideas based on Slavic and Central European culture.
In this project I have combined history and nature by using wood, where the wooden background becomes a part of the work. I have emphasized the grain as it is always unique and adds interest and diversity to the pieces. The intuitively discovered pattern of the wood grain can connect nature with our past, culture, tradition and history.
Every piece is a combination of creations of nature and the contribution of the artist, where the wood represents our connection to nature and to global human culture.
Repetition and symmetry are an essential part of nature; people have observed them from the beginning of mankind’s history. The wood grain repeats itself, however nature still creates variety. Likewise, historical events like eras of revolution, war, peace, economic growth, depression etc. repeat. I am combining repetition done by nature with repetition used in culture and traditions to symbolize our connection.
