Carina Maffett | Artists' Statement
I draw because it is the language that comes most naturally to me. My current focus is portraiture done with graphite, which often takes bits and pieces of the subject I aim to depict. Because of this, my drawings often replicate the subject's essence as opposed to the subject as a literal imitation.
Graphite is my favorite medium and the one I work with the most. This is due to its simplicity yet the depth it can expose when given the patience. To begin, I will start with an idea and concept that I intend to aim for, and it is from there that I create an outline that is freehanded and connected by one, sometimes two, different line paths. From here, I shade the shape to create the real soul of the drawing. In this stage, the drawings develop a personality of their own. This process makes each piece unique. Using graphite, sometimes just a singular shade, creates depth and dimensionality to each piece.
Through my work, I hope to explore the idea that a subject is the essence. What translates from reality to paper motivates my drawings' progression. My drawing is how I indicate and track my personal growth and reflects how I see the world and what I value within it.
Short Bio
In this series of works, I created various abstract portraits using a range of shapes, movements, and shading styles. Through this series, I hope to explore the idea of a subject is essence. What translates from reality to paper is what motivates the progression of these drawings. Each work is generated from partially randomized movements, giving each piece a unique character. The drawings explore a morphing sense of identity through their abstract nature. I completed these drawings in my first year living in Vancouver, and they represent a development of self within that time. My work indicates the growth that I've made and, furthermore, the emotions that I experienced throughout.
